I bought this plank of white oak around 1980 - I was so struck by the grain and figure, which resembled the skeleton of a fish. I waited and waited for the right use for it, resisting temptation to cut it up and use it on other projects. Finally, I had a vision of a dock-like structure supporting and showing off the plank. The whole piece has very 'watery' allusions - it's probably the most literal design I've ever produced.
