During my first year of graduate school, oh, back in 1979-80, I designed and built this piece to house my-then pipe collection. Made of bent plywood, veneered with crotch walnut with solid walnut edging and curly maple wall mount, the cabinet measured about 24″h x 16″w x 14″d. A friend of mine dubbed it ‘Star Wars woodworking’ – I guess it somehow reminded him of Darth Vader’s helmet. I never quite got the connection. For me, it represented a monumental achievement: it was a difficult design to execute even if I had been familiar with the process of bending plywood and facing it with veneer. I could only have done something like this as a student – I could not have charged enough to cover all the hours I put into it!
